Re: "Side Effects Lead to ER Visits," by Pamela Fayerman,

According to the Canadian Medical Association Journal, 12 per cent of patients who rush to the emergency room at Vancouver General Hospital are there because of adverse effects from medications. Dr. Peter Zed points out that better communication among doctors, pharmacists and patients is needed to prevent patients from being prescribed wrong drugs, given wrong dosages and having allergic reactions and interactions between drugs.
The provincial Pharmanet system, available to B.C.'s doctors since 2005, lets them look up patient medication history information quickly and easily. So far, the take-up has mostly been concentrated in mental health and addiction services, in corrections, and in emergency departments. We hope walk-in clinics, general practice and specialist physicians will choose to take advantage of this system soon.

Pharmanet now, pleaseAt the end of last year, a friend of mine had a small heart attack, followed by coronary artery bypass surgery. He has had serious breathing problems for years, so he went into surgery with chest congestion and asthma. They kept him in hospital for almost four weeks prior to his operation, trying to get his breathing stabilized.. Happily, things went well, and his heart is good for another 50,000 miles. His lungs have settled down, and while he is taking a long time to recover, if he gets enough exercise, he should be okay. More . . .
